Growing Concepts of Multi Unit Operators


Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).

Independence, MO-based OPHELIA\’S RESTAURANT (founded 1899) has increased by 1 unit, from 8 to 9 (13% company growth), with the addition of a new concept called El Pico.  Other company concepts are Café Verona (1), Clinton\’s Soda Fountain (1), Courthouse Exchange Restaurant (1), Main Street Coffee House (1), Ophelia\’s Restaurant (1), Square Pizza (1), Updog (1), and Yogurtini (1).  The restaurants are mostly family/casual concepts, open for lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is $8-$20+.  Full bar service is available at most units and average seating is for about 200.  Catering and private party facilities are available.  All the restaurants are in MO.

New York, NY-based CRAFT RESTAURANT (founded 2001) has increased by 1 unit for the Wichcraft concept, from 16 to 17 (6% concept growth) and added a new concept called Heritage Steak.  Other concepts are Colicchio & Sons (1), Craft (2), Craftbar (1), Craftsteak (2), Riverpark (1), and Topping Rose House (1).  Overall company increase was from 24 to 26 (8% company growth).  The concepts are upscale steak and seafood restaurants, with the exception of the Wichcraft concept, which is fast casual sandwiches.  Per person check average is $15-$50+, with full bar and average seating for around 150.  Catering, delivery, private party and online ordering services are all available.  Trading areas are CA, CT, NY, and NY.

Eau Claire, WI-based ERBERT & GERBERT\’S SUBS & CLUBS (founded 1988) has increased by 7 units, from 64 to 71 (11% growth) and entered into CO, MI, and TX.  This fast casual sandwich concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Stores seat about 30 and offer catering and online ordering services.  Locations are franchised and trade in CO, GA, MI, MN, ND, SD, and WI.

TILTED KILT of Tempe, AZ (founded 2003) has increased by 5 units, from 65 to 70 (8% growth) and expanded into CT.  These are family/casual restaurants with full bar and seating for around 200.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $8-$20+.  Locations are franchised and are in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MD, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA and WI.  

SHEETZ based in Altoona, PA (founded 1952) has increased by 33 units, from 430 to 463 (8% growth).  These are take-out sandwich restaurants.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$12+.  Locations are in MD, NC, OH, PA, VA and WV.

 

Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts

 

Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.

 

Sumner, WA-based THE ROCK WOOD FIRED PIZZA & SPIRITS (founded 1995) has increased by 3 units, from 18 to 21 (17% growth) and entered into AK.  This family/casual Italian & pizza concept is open for lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20+ per person check average.  Locations have full bar and seating for about 250.  The restaurants are franchised and trade in AB, AK, CO, OR, and WA.

Tallahassee, FL-based WHARF EXPRESS (founded 1986) has increased by 1 unit, from 7 to 8 (14% growth).  This family/casual seafood concept is open for lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20+ per person check average.  Beer and wine are served and seating is for about 100.  Catering and banquet rooms are available.  Trading areas are AL and FL, with an Albany, GA location to open this year.  We last featured this concept on 3/19/13 (17% growth).

MOOYAH BURGERS & FRIES based in Plano, TX (founded 2005) has increased by 4 units for the Mooyah Burgers concept, from 52 to 56 (8% concept growth).  These are fast casual restaurants with seating for around 60.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$12+.  Catering and online ordering are offered.  There is a second company concept called Ojos Locos Sports Cantina (5 units).  Overall company increase was from 57 to 61 (7% company growth).  Locations are in AL, AR, CA, CT, KS, MT, OK, TN, TX, VA and WA.  We last reported on this concept on 12/11/12 (39% growth).

CAFE ZUPAS based in Layton, UT (founded 2005) has increased by 4 units, from 20 to 24 (20% growth).  These are fast casual sandwich restaurants with seating for around 50.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$12+.  Catering and banquets are offered.  Locations are in AZ, NV and UT.  We reported on this concept on 5/28/13 when they had 54% growth.
