Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).


Santa Ana, CA-based JERRY\’S WOOD-FIRED DOGS (founded 2003) has increased by 1 unit, from 7 to 8 (14% growth).  The restaurants are fast casual, serving hot dogs and burgers.  Units serve beer and wine and have a per person check average of $4-$12+.  Average seating is for about 50.  Catering and online ordering are available.  Stores are franchised and trade in CA and TX.

Freeport, ME-based GROUND ROUND (founded 1969) has increased by 1 unit, from 28 to 29 (4% growth) and entered into OK.  This family/casual concept serves American cuisine and is open for lunch and dinner. Per person check average is $8-$20+, with full bar service and seating for about 200.  Catering and private party services are available.  All the restaurants are franchised and trade in ME, MN, MO, ND, NJ, NY, OK, PA, SD and WI.

Addison, TX-based POLLO TROPICAL (NASDAQ:FRGI; founded 1988) has increased by 38 units, from 129 to 167 (29% growth).  This fast casual chicken concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Units seat about 50 and offer catering, online ordering and drive-thru options.  Between 20% and 30% of locations are franchised.  Trading areas are FL, GA, TN and TX.  Pollo Tropical is a subsidiary of Fiesta Restaurant Group.

Philadelphia, PA-based LEE\’S HOAGIE HOUSE (founded 1953) has increased by 1 unit, from 14 to 15 (7% growth).  This is a fast casual sandwich shop, open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Beer is available.  Average seating is for about 50.  Catering, delivery and online ordering services are available.  Stores are in NJ and PA.

Portland, OR-based LAUGHING PLANET CAFE (founded 1995) has increased by 3 units, from 11 to 14 (27% growth) and entered into NV.  This fast casual vegetarian concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person check average.  Beer is served and seating is for about 90.  Catering and online ordering are available.  Trading areas are NV and OR.

Vestavia Hills, AL-based TAZIKI\’S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE (founded 1998) has increased by 10 units, from 39 to 49 (26% growth) and entered into FL, LA and MS.  This fast casual Mediterranean concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $6-$15+ per person check average.  Locations serve beer and wine and seat about 100.  Catering and private party facilities are available.  The restaurants are franchised and trade in AL, AR, CO, FL, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX, VA and WV.  We last featured this concept on 10/7/14 (44% growth).

Huntington Beach, CA-based BJ\’S RESTAURANTS (NASDAQ:BJRI; founded 1978) has increased by 25 units, from 138 to 163 (18% growth) and entered into AR, MD, NY, PA and VA.  The restaurants are family/casual, serving American cuisine.  Per person check average is $10-$30+, with full bar service and seating for about 300.  Online ordering and private party services are available.  Trading areas are AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TX, VA and WA.  We wrote about this concept on 11/19/13 (14% growth).

Addison, TX-based BAR LOUIE (founded 1990) has increased by 7 units, from 85 to 92 (8% growth) and entered into SC. This family/casual American restaurant concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $10-$30+ per person check average.  Locations have full bar and seating for about 200.  Banquet services are available.  The restaurants are franchised and trade in AL, AR, AZ, CO, DC, FL, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA and WI.  We wrote about this concept on 4/1/14 (21% growth).
