Growing Concepts of Multi Unit Operators


Concepts that have grown by at least 5% (if less than 50 units).
Michigan-based SALA THAI (founded 1994) has increased by 1 unit, from 3 to 4 (33% growth).  The restaurants are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20+ per person check average.  Locations have full bar and seating for about 90.  Private party and delivery services are available.  All units are in MI.

Mercer, PA-based SPRINGFIELD RESTAURANT GROUP (founded 1979) has increased by 1 unit for the Rachel’s Roadhouse concept, from 1 to 2 (100% concept growth).  Other company concepts include Hickory Bar & Grille (1), Iron Bridge Inn (1), Log Cabin Inn (1), and Springfield Grille (3).  Overall company increase was from 7 to 8 (14% growth).  These are upscale restaurant concepts, open for lunch and dinner, with a $15-$50+ per person check average.  Locations have full bar service and seat around 150.  Cuisine is American.  Banquet rooms are available.  The restaurants are in OH and PA.

Illinois-based BLUEBERRY HILL PANCAKE HOUSE has increased by 1 unit for the Blueberry Hill Pancake House concept, from 5 to 6 (20% concept growth).  Other concepts are Alfie\’s Inn (1) and Nick\’s Pizza & Beef (1).  Overall company increase was from 7 to 8 (14% company growth).  These family/casual concepts serve American cuisine, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (Nick’s and Alfie’s are open for lunch and dinner only).  Per person price range is from $6-$15+, with average seating for about 100.  Alfie’s has full bar, other concepts serve no alcohol.  All locations are in IL.

New York, NY-based PRET A MANGER (founded 1986) has increased by 45 units, from 303 to 348 (15% growth) and entered into MA.  This fast casual sandwich shop is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a $4-$12+ per person price range.  Units seat about 50 and offer catering service.  Trading areas are DC, IL, MA, NY, the UK, Hong Kong, and France.

PI\’S PROPERTY MANAGEMENT of Midland, MI has increased by 1 unit, from 4 to 5 (25% growth) adding a new concept called Pi’s Asian cuisine.  Other concepts are Genji Japanese Steakhouse (2), Pi\’s Asian Express (1) and Pi\’s Chinese Restaurant (1).  These tend to be family/casual Asian restaurants with full bar and seating for around 200.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $10-$30+.  Catering and banquet services are offered.  All locations are in MI.

POLLY\’S PIES based in Anaheim, CA (founded 1968) has increased by 1 unit for Polly\’s from 16 to 17 (6% growth).  These are family/casual bakery cafes with seating for around 80.  Beer and wine are served.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $4-$12+.  Catering and banquets are offered.  The company also operates 14 KFC restaurants.  Overall company growth is from 30 to 31 (3% company growth).  

CHUCK E CHEESE\’S headquartered in Irving, TX (founded 1977) has increased by 11 units from 558 to 569 (2% growth).  These are family/casual restaurants with seating for around 400.  Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner. Banquets are offered.  Locations are in AB, AK, AL, AR, AZ, BC, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, ON, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, SK, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV.

 

Emerging and Re-emerging Concepts

 

Concepts with 20 units or less who grew by at least 2 units.

 

New York, NY-based ROSA MEXICANO (founded 1984) has increased by 2 units, from 15 to 18 (13% growth).  This upscale Mexican restaurant concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a $15-$50+ per person check average.  The restaurants have full bar and seating for about 200.  Catering, banquet and online ordering services are available.  Trading areas are CA, DC, FL, GA, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, Dubai, and Panama.

Culver City, CA-based COUNTER BURGER (founded 2003) has increased by 5 units, from 36 to 41 (14% growth).  This family/casual restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, with a $6-$15+ per person price range.  Locations serve mostly beer and wine (some provide full bar service).  Average seating is for about 100.  Between 80% and 90% of units are franchised.  Trading areas are CA, CT, FL, GA, HI, NY, TX, VA, Ireland, and Saudi Arabia.  We last featured this concept on 12/18/12 (9% growth).

West Palm Beach, FL-based HURRICANE GRILL & WINGS (founded 1995) has increased by 5 units, from 51 to 56 (10% growth) and entered into CO and GA.  The restaurants are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner.  Locations have full bar and seat about 100.  Catering is available.  All the restaurants are franchised and trade in AL, AZ, CO, FL, GA, IN, MD, MI, MN, NC, NY, and TX.  We last wrote about this concept on 4/2/2013 (13% growth).

Northbrook, IL-based LOU MALNATI\’S PIZZA (founded 1971) has increased by 1 unit, from 35 to 36 (3% growth).  The restaurants are family/casual, open for lunch and dinner, with a $6-$15+ per person price range.  Average seating is for about 200, with full bar service.  Select locations have limited seating and are take-out/delivery only.  Catering, private party, and online ordering options are offered.  All locations are in IL.  We last wrote about this company on 2/19/13 (3% growth).

TEXAS ROADHOUSE headquartered in Louisville, KY (Nasdaq: TXRH – founded 1993) has increased by 31 units for Texas Roadhouse, from 387 to 418 (8% concept growth) and expanded into OR.  These are family/casual steakhouses open for dinner with full bar and seating for around 250.  Per person check average is around $10-$30+.  There is a second company concept called Aspen Creek (2 units).  Overall company increase is from 390 to 420 (8% overall growth), due to a 1 unit decrease for the Aspen Creek concept.  Locations are in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV and WY.  Franchising is offered.  We last reported on this concept on 10/16/12 (3% growth).  

ZAXBY\’S of Athens, GA (founded 1990) has increased by 24 units, from 563 to 587 (4% growth).  These are fast casual chicken restaurants with seating for around 90.  Meal periods are lunch and dinner.  Per person check average is around $6-$15+.  Catering is offered.  Locations are more than 90% franchised and are in AL, AR, FL, GA, IN, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, TX and VA.  We reported on this company’s growth on 5/22/12 (4% growth).
